SeaCity Museum

Southampton’s Titanic story and city history

SeaCity Museum explores how the Titanic disaster affected Southampton and its people. At the Civic Centre on Havelock Road, the museum combines Southampton’s Titanic Story with exhibitions about the city’s wider history.

The museum and Southampton

SeaCity Museum approaches maritime history through Southampton: the people who lived and worked in the port, the ships that connected it with other places, and the communities that grew around them. Its Civic Centre location is separate from the historic streets of the Old Town.

The museum is an indoor attraction with a café and shop. It provides a different kind of visit from following an outdoor memorial trail, with objects, recorded accounts and interactive displays to spend time with.

Southampton and the Titanic

Southampton’s Titanic Story focuses on the ship’s departure and the disaster’s effect on the city. Items connected with the ship and the voices of survivors put individual experiences alongside the sequence of events.

The city’s Titanic trail is a separate outdoor route linking memorials and associated places. A museum ticket is for the exhibitions; it does not turn the memorial trail into a guided tour. A visitor interested mainly in local lives and the impact of the loss can make the Titanic exhibition the centre of the museum visit.

Other exhibitions

Gateway to the World broadens the view beyond a single ship, tracing Southampton’s development through successive periods and its role as a place of arrival and departure. Southampton Stories adds objects and accounts from the city’s collections.

Together these exhibitions make SeaCity relevant to a general city visit as well as a Titanic-focused one. They are also the reason to allow time beyond a quick look at the best-known gallery.

Planning a visit

The museum recommends allowing two to four hours to appreciate the exhibitions, architecture and digital material fully. That is a museum visit alone, before adding a walk through the Old Town or time travelling from a cruise terminal.

Normal opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-16:30 and Sunday 11:00-16:00. Last admission is at 16:15 Monday-Saturday and 15:45 on Sunday; arriving at last admission leaves very little exhibition time. SeaCity’s visitor information covers tickets, bags and facilities, and its website links to online admission sales.

All museum areas except the clock tower have step-free access. A lift reaches the first floor, where the number of wheelchair users at one time is limited to four. Accessible toilets are available.

Getting there and exploring nearby

The address is Civic Centre, Havelock Road, Southampton SO14 7FY. It is the museum address to use when planning the last part of an arrival journey; Southampton’s cruise terminals are separate destinations.

The Old Town and Tudor House provide a different view of the city after the museum. For an aviation collection, Solent Sky is the alternative. Arrival choices for the city are under getting here.
