Getting to Southampton
Rail, coach, air and road connections
Southampton Central, the coach station, the airport and the passenger terminals serve different parts of your journey. Choose the connection into Southampton together with the final leg to your hotel, cruise ship or Isle of Wight ferry.

Choosing your route to Southampton
A city break can begin at a central hotel; a cruise begins at the terminal named for your sailing; a ferry to the Isle of Wight begins at Town Quay. Those endpoints need different final connections even when the long-distance train or coach is the same.
| Arrival | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Southampton Central | Travel on to your hotel or named cruise terminal; Town Quay is a separate connection |
| Coach Station, Harbour Parade | Continue to the hotel, ship or ferry terminal |
| Southampton Airport | Choose the train from Airport Parkway or a taxi to your address |
| By car | Navigate to the hotel or booked parking arrival point |
Compare the whole journey with your luggage, rather than just the longest section. An overnight stay also creates time for Southampton’s sights before or after a cruise.
Trains to Southampton Central
South Western Railway connects Southampton with London Waterloo. Its timetable collection also covers Bournemouth and Weymouth, Portsmouth and the route via Southampton Central towards Romsey and Salisbury. Use Southampton Central as the station for a city-centre arrival.
Southampton Airport Parkway is the airport station, not another name for Central. Select it when your destination is the airport; select Central when continuing into the city. The SWR timetables and journey planner show the route for your date, including service changes. London travel covers the Waterloo journey in more detail.
Coaches to Southampton
National Express route 032 links Southampton Coach Station on Harbour Parade with Heathrow and London Victoria Coach Station. The published route serves Heathrow Terminal 5 and Central Bus Station, so choose the stop that matches your flight terminal.
Search for the correct direction and travel date in the 032 timetable. On arrival at Harbour Parade, allow for getting your bags and making the final journey. A coach ticket to Southampton does not by itself take you to a cruise-terminal entrance.
Flying to Southampton or London
Southampton Airport has its own nearby rail station, Airport Parkway. From there, travel by train into Southampton or take a taxi to the actual hotel or cruise terminal. The short airport-to-station connection is only the beginning of a journey to the ship.
Heathrow and Gatwick involve different connections. Heathrow has the National Express route to Southampton and a rail-and-coach option through Woking. Gatwick’s railway station is in the South Terminal, with interchange options for reaching the SWR network. Compare the onward journey as well as the flight on the airport page.
Driving to Southampton
The M3 and M27 connect Southampton with the wider road network. For a hotel stay, use the property’s arrival and parking instructions. For a cruise, use the booked parking provider’s arrival point or the gate directions for your sailing rather than a generic port destination.
A city car park and a cruise parking reservation serve different lengths of stay. Establish where the car remains, how you reach the ship and how collection works after the cruise. Cruise parking compares parking within the port with airport parking and transfers, while hotels explains what to ask about overnight packages.
Getting to your ship or ferry
Southampton’s five cruise terminals are divided between the Eastern and Western Docks. Keep the terminal name with your transport booking and use your cruise line’s boarding appointment when planning arrival.
Red Funnel’s ferries use Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Town Quay. Terminal 1 serves East Cowes with the vehicle ferry; Terminal 2 serves West Cowes with Red Jet. Those ferry terminals are separate from the cruise terminals. Choosing the right Cowes destination is part of choosing the route, especially if you continue across the island.

Southampton to London
Trains link Southampton with London Waterloo, while National Express coaches arrive at Victoria Coach Station. Moving on to London after a stay or cruise is a different journey from visiting for the day and returning to Southampton.
Southampton Airport
Southampton Airport has a nearby railway station at Airport Parkway, with trains into Southampton. Arriving through Heathrow or Gatwick involves a longer onward journey and different interchange points, so the flight and the connection to your hotel or ship belong in the same plan.
Cruise port
Southampton has five cruise terminals spread across the Eastern and Western Docks. Your terminal determines the port entrance and the final journey from the station or hotel, so use the name on your cruise documents when arranging transport.
Ferries from Southampton
Red Funnel sails from Southampton’s Town Quay to two different places on the Isle of Wight: East Cowes by vehicle ferry and West Cowes by Red Jet. The Hythe route currently has no scheduled passenger ferry service.
